Chapter 10

General Hospital

Lorenzo paced the cold hospital floors while Kendall and Jr. both tended to both their mother and Nirah. Lorenzo was deep in thought. He wished he would have had the guts to kiss his father one last time. Or even go see how his mother Joyce was doing. Hell, he couldn’t even bring himself to step foot in Nirah’s room and she was expected to make a full recovery.

“Zo, Zo baby. I’m right here honey.” Candy finally arrived at the hospital with their 2-year-old son nicknamed Deuce. She let go of the baby’s hand and outstretched her arms toward her husband. He looked so distraught and lost. His poor eyes were bloodshot red and so was his nose. Candy could tell that Lorenzo had been crying and it tore her to pieces.

Little Deuce wrapped himself around his daddy’s leg as his mother held his father like he himself was a baby. He didn’t understand what was wrong but he knew the energy wasn’t right. So Deuce started to cry too. The small family of 3 could barely hold it together. They were a mess.

“Candy, thank you for coming sweetheart. My brother needs you right now. We all do.” That was Jr. talking.

Candy lifted her head up from the crook of Lorenzo’s neck and started to say something but Jr. cut her off.

“I know sis. I know. Ain’t no words right now.” He walked up and joined them in the group embrace. Secretly he was just as lost as his big brother. But he’d already decided that as his father’s namesake, he was going to be strong and hold his family down.

Jr. wouldn’t allow his girlfriend to come to the hospital with him. She was carrying their firstborn and he couldn’t risk her catching the Coronavirus from any of the patients in the hospital. It was currently a pandemic and he just couldn’t take those chances. It’s partly why he was so relieved when he saw Candy. She was as sweet as her name and was like a baby sister to him. Plus, she carried a motherly spirit about herself. Jr. needed that right now.

“What’s good sis, please tell me something good.” Jr.’s eyes pleaded with Candy.

If he didn’t get a glimmer of hope from somewhere he was going to lose his mind. Candy searched her brother-in-law’s eyes. She wanted to tell him that everything was going to be alright. But the truth was that even her sun-shiny self couldn’t find the words. She didn’t know enough of the situation to really speak on it. Lorenzo had been so vague when she’d spoken to him that all she really knew was that someone was in the hospital. She thought she heard him say that someone was dead but, she wasn’t sure.

“What happened bro? Can you let me know what’s going on? I couldn’t get much from my baby. I just knew to get down here” Candy spoke to Jr.

“My daddy dead sis. He gone. They telling me my mama suffered a major stroke and might not remember us, if she wakes up.
